Closed temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery

Closed TMJ surgery has a high success rate in relieving pain and improving jaw function. The outcomes depend on the specific condition being treated and the patient’s overall health and adherence to postoperative care instructions.

Purposes
  • Closed TMJ surgery is performed to address various TMJ disorders, including:
    • Chronic jaw pain
    • Limited jaw movement
    • Lockjaw (jaw locking)
    • Inflammation and swelling
    • Structural damage or degeneration within the joint

Advantages
  • Minimally Invasive: Compared to open joint surgery, arthroscopic surgery involves smaller incisions, leading to less tissue damage and scarring.
  • Faster Recovery: Patients often experience shorter recovery times and less postoperative pain.

Advantages of

Closed TMJ Surgeries

  • The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1 hour, with the patient being discharged on the same day.
  • The patient can return to normal life the day after the operation.
  • The risk of infection in the operation area is almost nonexistent.
  • In effect the jaw joint capsule is not cut during the operation, recovery is very fast, and the risk of post-operative complications is very low.
  • The operation is closed, so there will be no incision marks.

The neglect or delay of closed surgical operations may result in complications that require open TMJ surgeries.

Possible complications of open TMJ surgery include:

  • The patient may not be able to open their jaw as before.
  • Ankylosis may develop in the patient’s jaw.
  • Additional costs for joint prostheses for reconstruction.
  • Longer hospital stays and recovery periods, as well as increased costs, due to larger surgical procedures.
  • Increased risk of infection.
  • Jaw prostheses made of biocompatible materials may not be accepted by some patients’ bodies.
  • Loosening of screws or breaking of prostheses in applied procedures may lead to second and more costly surgeries.
  • Instead of increased comfort, the patient may experience decreased comfort and increased pain.
  • If the patient’s own tissues are used for isolation (posterior part of the Temporalis Muscle), larger incisions in the head area and aesthetic defects may occur, necessitating future aesthetic surgeries with high costs.
  • The Facial Nerve (responsible for facial movements), Temporalis Artery, and organs such as the eyes and ears, which are very close to the area, may be damaged or affected by infections.
  • The patient’s chewing and speaking functions may not be as comfortable as before.
  • A significant psychological defect may develop in the patient.

Nurten Demirci

Hello, I recommend Professor Mustafa Tek to patients who have jaw problems and have been searching for a solution for years, like me. Believe me, he understood my problem just from my panoramic film. I went to many jaw surgeons, but they didn’t understand. He started my treatment with the second surgical procedure in December. With his care and success, I believe I will be much better by the end of the 6th month. I would like to thank him and his entire team.
